Maybe your daughter has seen a big kid wearing a messenger bag or has seen them on TV. After all, they’re cute, you can fit loads in them, and they’re really fun to use. Whether it’s for carrying her secret treasures or daily “essentials” that don’t fit in the diaper bag, a messenger bag is a cute accessory that any little girl can appreciate.
You will need: a cheap, single action airbrush, masking tape, iron and ironing board, Createx airbrush paint (found at Michael’s) of colors of your choice (if your bag is black or any other color than white, you will need white), a mini-messenger bag from Michael’s Arts and Crafts or other store of your choice, a dust mask and an air compressor or air can. (You can take this to an airbrush artist in the mall, but make sure to heat set it once you get home just to be safe.)
Warnings: Do not use anything other than airbrush paint. Also make sure that the brand you are using is not used on cars or anything heavy duty. The Createx carried at Michael’s is safe. If you happen to breathe it in, you might get a few funny colored boogers. Other kinds can potentially cause respiratory problems that can affect you and your little one for life if breathed in. Look online for other safe kinds if you cannot find this brand.
First, put on your dust mask and take the bag and whatever colors you and your little girl chose. Set it as flat and wrinkle-less as you can get it. You can iron it if you wish. Take your tape and mask off (pretty much cover up) random areas. Try and keep it flat. If using a black/colored bag, first use an even coat of white over the back and front, or just back/front, whatever you’re painting. There should still be spots that are pure black/colored. If using white, start using the colors you’re going to use. (Keep in mind that compliments such as red/green, blue/orange, and yellow/purple will turn brown if mixed. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use them together, but make sure not to overlap them too much.) Paint it how you want. This can be in rainbow, in small blocks, etc. Use a light spray so that you don’t cause the paint to spatter. A light coat will be more than enough. Hold the airbrush back about six or more inches.
Let the paint dry completely. This should take around five minutes if you didn’t overspray. If you did, it can take quite a bit longer. Once it is completely dry, heat up your iron and remove the tape.
This is called heat setting. What you need to do is iron all over the bag for about ten, perhaps twenty minutes. This will make the color last longer. If you want to do it a little bit longer, then by all means. Make sure to keep the iron moving so that you don’t accidentally burn the bag. Afterwards, let cool. If you didn’t wear a dust mask, quietly go to the bathroom and pick the inside of your nose with a tissue to get rid of any weird colored boogers. After that, you’re done! Present it to your daughter and watch her smile.
